2010 BUA Grant Recipient- Mar Stegall
Many immigrant families from other countries move to the high country every year and need help integrating into the culture. Some of these industrious foreign folks go to a class/group offered at the Watauga County Cooperative Extension Center. It is called Latino Women's Group and it is lead by a long-time supporter of local Latino issues named Mary Boyer. What started as a group for women has developed into a support group for whole families.
Three years ago I went to help with a puppet show there and saw that some of the children had never painted or used even the simplest art supplies. Being a home-schooler, I also saw the opportunity for a Spanish class for my kid. My daughter Blue and I started showing up with bags of household junk, etc. to create art with the children while their mothers learned about English and cultural differences.
Two years ago, the Cooperative Extension Office granted this group funds for a garden in the back parking lot. Below the garden is a wall approximately 70 feet long and 1 foot high.
Last Summer we painted a rainbow from one end to the other.
I found that working for a specific goal was much better than just hanging out. So this Summer I have booked us an art show including a reception in September at Earth Fare Cafe. Each class period we will work on our submissions for the show.
I am writing this grant to ask for the funds to purchase high quality supplies that professional artists might use. With these supplies we will accomplish several objectives at once. First, the children will gain problem-solving skills that are inherent in the creation of art. Second, working on a long term project develops discipline and focus plus the reward of seeing it through. Third, having their art hanging up for all to see builds confidence in them and in their community. Finally, Earth Fare is constructing a bridge between this Latino community and their patrons by providing us this opportunity.
Most of us take for granted access to even the most basic of art supplies, i.e. glue, scissors, paint, etc. These children really appreciate everything I bring and exhibit a great deal of enthusiasm for the projects.
Where does ultimate fit into the equation? Mellow Mushroom donates pizza each week and while we wait we play games, sometimes we use a disc. A grant from the BUA would certainly make everyone aware of ultimate and the spirit which sets it apart from other sports.
Once a group of local leaders of civic organizations held a luncheon for the Womens Group and we all went around the room giving the history of our various heritages. Every single person there came from some kind of immigrant background. I feel it is important for us all to remember we possess similar immigrant origins in this country and what makes us great is diversity and community.
Thank you,
Mar Startari-Stegall
